Reincarnation

Meaning

Reincarnation is the premise where the protagonist dies and is born again in a new body while keeping memories of the previous life. It is distinct from regression (replaying the same life) and possession (entering an existing body): a reincarnated protagonist starts from birth. The new world may be the old one or a sword-and-sorcery other world. Because the previous life's profession or talent usually carries over, titles like "the child who was a sword saint" or "the noble daughter who was a chef" often announce the past life up front.

Why it matters

Of the three opening devices, reincarnation buys the most time. Starting from childhood allows a long growth arc and lets relationships with family, mentors and first friends be built from scratch. The cost is that readers wait longer. Web novel practice compresses childhood into a few chapters and shows the past life's skill in action early. The genre's real strength is that the protagonist sees the new world with an outsider's eyes: every moment where the old life's common sense fails becomes a seed of conflict.

Example

On his third birthday Junha held a sword for the first time. A wooden toy, but his hands remembered before he did: the weight distribution he had rehearsed every morning for forty years in a previous life. The nursemaid took his fingers and corrected the grip. "Not like that, young master." Junha let her. Swordsmanship here was built around heavy armor, so the grip sat lower. That meant there was something to learn.

One scene sets the growth direction by letting the past skill (forty years of sword work) collide with the new world's rules (a different grip).

Common mistakes

• Spending too long on childhood. Readers did not come for a toddler's daily routine. Put one event per chapter that reveals the past-life ability, or skip years without apology.
• Making the memories free. An adult mind in a child's body distorts relationships with parents and peers. If that distortion is never written, there was no reason to reincarnate.
• Copying the old world into the new one. If nothing differs, the story is regression by another name. At least one of physics, economics or ethics must change.
