Advance reading (seondok)

Seondok ('reading ahead') is paying to read the newest episodes before they turn free: the early-access billing model of Korean webtoon and web novel apps.

Also written as: early access

Meaning

Seondok, "reading ahead", is paying to read the newest episodes before they are released free. Platforms call it "preview" or "early release", but the structure is the same: the latest few episodes require payment, and after a set period they unlock one by one. Where wait-or-pay unlocks older episodes with time, advance reading pulls the newest ones forward with money. The two models usually run on the same title at once.

Why it matters

Advance reading is the core of revenue during serialization. Binge readers arrive after completion, but advance readers pay right now because they cannot wait for the next episode. That is why cuts in the advance-reading window should be the most aggressive in the whole serial. The moment a free reader weighs "wait until it unlocks or pay now" is the moment advance revenue is decided. The number of advance episodes (usually three to ten) depends on the platform and the contract, and it survives only on the writer's stockpile of finished manuscripts. When the stockpile runs dry, the advance window disappears and the serial wobbles.

Example

Free episodes ran to 84. Episodes 85 through 90 were advance-only. Hayeon read the last line of 84, "The person at the door was the brother who had died three years ago," and turned off her screen.

Twelve hours later she opened the app and paid for 85. Waiting for it to unlock meant six days, and she could not face six days of not knowing why her brother was alive.

Advance payment is decided by the weight of the question an episode ends on. That she held out twelve hours shows how strong the cut was.

Common mistakes

  • Writing advance episodes at the same intensity as free ones. Cuts in the advance window must be the strongest. Stack information, danger and relationship questions.
  • Opening the window without a stockpile. Advance episodes must appear on the scheduled day, every week. Start with at least ten in reserve.
  • Slowing down inside the window. Paying readers have bought time. A slow stretch in advance episodes produces the sharpest sense of betrayal.
