KakaoPage
KakaoPage is one of Korea's largest web novel and webtoon platforms and the creator of wait-or-pay; it runs on works contracted through publishers.
Also written as: kakaopage
Meaning
KakaoPage is the web novel and webtoon platform operated by Kakao Entertainment, and the first to introduce the wait-or-pay (gidamu) billing model that became the market standard. Unlike Munpia and Joara it has essentially no free board; works arrive under contract through publishers (content providers) or management companies and go up after editing. It is strong across rofan, contemporary romance, male-oriented fantasy and martial arts, and because it produces webtoon adaptations of its novels in-house, the path for expanding an IP sits inside the platform. Episode practice is 5,000 to 5,500 characters with spaces.
Why it matters
KakaoPage is the top of the revenue curve. The combination of wait-or-pay and promotion generates binge readers at scale, and the per-episode revenue of its top titles is an order of magnitude above other platforms. What matters to the writer is the way in. Direct submission is narrow, so most works go through a publisher or management company, and those contracts often include KakaoPage exclusivity. If you want to reach KakaoPage, the party you actually negotiate with is the publisher, not the platform. In the publisher contract, check the revenue split (the publisher's share after the platform's commission), how concrete the promotion promises are, and the webtoon clause. As of 2026 the platform has no separate AI-use rule, but readers who spot "AI-style prose" respond with ratings and comments, which functions as the practical regulation.
Example
Jisu's rofan went up on KakaoPage four months after she signed with a publisher. First-week promotional banner, wait-or-pay placement, 25 free episodes.
First-month statistics: 40,000 readers finished the 25 free episodes. Conversion at paid episode one: 48 percent. Read-through after that: 94 to 96 percent per episode.
A note from the editor: "Episode 27 read-through is 89 percent, alone. Please take another look." Episode 27 was where the male lead burns the heroine's letter unread. Jisu kept the scene but had him read one line before burning it, giving the reader the information that he knows.
KakaoPage editors speak in per-episode data. Collaboration works when the writer can interpret it.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for direct submission. KakaoPage's main entrance is publishers and management companies. Submit there.
- Mistaking a publisher contract for a KakaoPage contract. Your counterparty is the publisher. Ask what the publisher has been promised by the platform.
- Relaxing because there is no AI rule. Without a rule, readers regulate. AI tells come back as ratings.
