Gate (dungeon portal)
A gate is a dimensional door that appears in the modern world and leads to a monster dungeon; it is both the stage and the event generator of the hunter genre.
Also written as: dungeon · portal
Meaning
A gate is a dimensional door that opens without warning in a modern city. Beyond it lies a dungeon inhabited by monsters, and hunters go in to clear them. Gates have ranks, and if one is not cleared within a set time it "breaks", spilling monsters into the street. "Dungeon" refers to the space beyond and is used almost interchangeably, but strictly the gate is the door and the dungeon is what is inside.
Why it matters
The gate is the hunter genre's event generator. Nobody knows when or where one will open, its rank can be measured wrong, and what is inside is unknown until someone enters. Those three uncertainties produce tension every episode. Gates also carry deadlines: days until a break, hours to clear. Deadlines are excellent raw material for cliffhanger cuts. At the worldbuilding level, "why do gates open" often becomes the central planted question of a long serial. Early on they simply open; by the midpoint a pattern shows; near the end the cause is revealed.
Example
The gate opened outside Exit 11 of Gangnam Station. Two in the afternoon, a Thursday. The association's examiner rated it D, and a nearby guild volunteered to clear it within two hours.
Ten hours passed. None of the six guild members came out. The surface of the gate shifted from blue to violet. The examiner raised his device again. Where the rank should have been, the screen showed a question mark.
Crisis stacks up through a measurement error (not a D), elapsed time (ten hours) and a visible change (color). The protagonist has not appeared yet; the gate alone opens the next episode.
Common mistakes
- Every dungeon is the same cave. The environment (a flooded city, an abandoned school, an upside-down apartment block) sets the rules of the fight. Design the stage.
- Ignoring the clock. A gate with no break deadline is just a hunting ground. Hang a timer on it.
- Explaining the cause early. The cause is the last key of the serial. Hold it and leak only signs.
