Meaning
A constellation, seongjwa, is a transcendent being in hunter and gate settings who watches humans from above and sponsors the ones it likes. Constellations take the names of mythic or historical figures and reach the protagonist through system messages: "[The constellation 'King Who Holds a Bloodied Sword' is interested in you.]" Sponsorship arrives as coins, skills, items or, occasionally, direct intervention. A constellation is an audience, a patron and a potential enemy at once, and that triple nature is the genre's engine.
Why it matters
Constellations solve two problems together. First, they explain why the protagonist gets stronger inside the world's logic (sponsorship). Second, they put an audience inside the story. Constellations reacting to the protagonist's deeds and throwing coins mirrors exactly how web novel readers react with comments and payments, which gives the genre a meta charge. A constellation's taste becomes the story's direction. Written well, you get a political drama in which the protagonist negotiates with, betrays and exploits patrons. Written poorly, system windows replace the story.
Example
[The constellation 'Watchman Who Arrived Late' is disappointed in your choice.] [The constellation 'Watchman Who Arrived Late' has withdrawn sponsorship.]
Jaeha dismissed the message and picked the broken spear back up. The Watchman had wanted him to abandon the village and run. That was "efficiency." But someone beyond the window was watching this scene right now. Jaeha spoke to the sky. "If you're going to watch, watch properly."
[A new constellation has entered the channel.]
The patron's expectation (run) collides with the protagonist's choice (stay), and the choice itself attracts a new sponsor. Attitude, not power, decides the reward.
Common mistakes
- System windows doing the narration. Messages are seasoning, not the meal. Emotion and action belong in the character's sentences.
- Constellations that are all friendly. Each has its own taste and agenda. They should fight each other, compete for the protagonist and betray.
- Sponsorship with no price. Free power removes tension. Every gift should carry a condition, an expectation or a debt.
