Meaning

Free serialization is an open board where anyone can post without review. Munpia's free section, Joara's free serialization and Novelpia's general board are the main examples. Registering an account is enough to create a work and post episodes, and readers read for free. The views, favorites, recommendations and comments a work accumulates become its report card, and past certain thresholds it qualifies for official-serialization review or a conversion application. Publisher and management scouts also watch the free boards. The large platforms (KakaoPage, Naver Series) have essentially no free board.

Why it matters

Free serialization is the selection system of Korean web fiction. Works are filtered by reader response rather than an editor's eye, so it is nearly the only open door for an unknown writer. The competition is extreme: hundreds of works go up daily, and most never pass 100 views on episode one. The conditions for surviving are clear. Post daily, deliver the genre's promise within three episodes, state the tropes in the title and blurb, and end episodes in ways that hold early readers. Free-board statistics are brutally honest. You can see exactly which episode readers left at, so the board is where a writer learns the weaknesses of their own work. It is also the only window in which the early episodes can be fixed before paywall conversion.

Example

Minjae's first work stalled at 400 views on episode one after three weeks. Episode 2: 90. Episode 3: 40. Read-through 22 percent, then 44.

He reread episode one. The first 2,000 characters were worldbuilding: the hunter association's history, the rank system, how gates work. The event started at character 2,500.

His second work opened with "The meter showed a question mark." Episode-one views were similar, but episode-two read-through was 68 percent. That was the work that reached conversion.

A first free serial usually fails, but the numbers from that failure build the second.

Common mistakes

  • Irregular posting. The free-board algorithm and its readers remember works that appear daily. Three times a week or more, at the same hour.
  • Opening with exposition. If episode 1-to-2 read-through is under 30 percent, the cause is almost always the first half of episode one.
  • Clinging to a work that is not performing. If read-through has not recovered by episode 30, take what you learned into the next work.
