Prose style

munche

Prose style is a writer's texture of sentence length, vocabulary, rhythm and narrative distance; each genre expects one, and it must stay consistent.

Also written as: voice · writing style

Meaning

Prose style is the texture of the sentences. Sentence length and rhythm, the register of vocabulary, the frequency of figurative language, the distance between narrator and character, and the ratio of dialogue to narration combine into style. It is why the same event reads differently from writer to writer. Genres carry expectations: web novels standardize short sentences, frequent line breaks and quick dialogue, while literary fiction allows long breath and dense description. When style wavers inside a work, readers feel that someone else wrote it.

Why it matters

Style is the fingerprint by which readers recognize a writer. In serial fiction it also sets reading speed. A sentence that runs past three lines becomes a whole paragraph on a phone screen, and readers skip it. Style is also the central problem of writing with AI. A model's default is smooth, uniform sentences, and that uniformity is the "AI tell". Keeping your own style means showing the model a style sample (a passage of your own manuscript) and having it follow that texture. Writers who can define their style use AI as a tool; writers who cannot get absorbed into the AI's style.

Example

One scene, two styles.

A (short, dry): The door opened. A man stood there. Soaked. He said nothing. Neither did Yuri.

B (long, dense): What stood there when the door opened was a man soaked to the shoulders and sagging under it, and while he looked at Yuri without a word the corridor's fluorescent light flickered twice.

A suits web novel action and thrillers; B suits literary fiction or a still scene in a romance. Neither is correct; the whole work has to pick one.

Common mistakes

  • Style drifting between episodes. Mood, whatever you last read and whether an AI draft was used all shift the texture. Reading aloud in revision catches it.
  • Style at odds with genre. Three-line sentences in a hunter story draw "boring" comments that are about style, not content.
  • Mistaking ornament for style. Adding metaphors and adjectives is decoration. Style is decided more by what is removed.
