Narrative
seosa
Narrative is arranging events in time and causation so they carry meaning; 'weak narrative' means events exist but never connect into a character's change.

Meaning
Narrative is placing events in order and causation so they produce meaning. If plot is the arrangement of events itself, narrative is the whole experience that arrangement creates for the reader: through whose eyes, in what voice, emphasizing what and leaving out what. In craft discussion, "it has narrative" means events lead to a character's change and that change gathers into one meaning. "Weak narrative" means the events, however many, are scattered.
Why it matters
The most common note in web novel feedback is "there's no narrative." There are fights and romance, so why? Because the events do not change the character. If the protagonist only wins for a hundred episodes and no victory moves their beliefs or relationships at all, that is a list, not a narrative. Narrative is also a matter of selection. The same life becomes a different story depending on where you start, where you end and what you cut. A regression story beginning just before death, a rofan beginning at a broken engagement: these are chosen starting points of narrative.
Example
The same events arranged with and without narrative.
List: Ep. 1 clears a dungeon. Ep. 2 clears a bigger one. Ep. 3 joins a guild. Ep. 4 kills a boss. Ep. 5 promoted to S-rank.
Narrative: Ep. 1 clears a dungeon, leaving a companion behind to get out alone. Ep. 2 news that the companion died. Ep. 3 joins a guild, on the condition of working solo. Ep. 4 in front of a boss, a rookie is hurt and for the first time he covers someone's back. Ep. 5 promoted to S-rank; the examiner asks, "You said you work alone." He does not answer.
The second arrangement has the same events bound to one axis, "alone", and each event moves that axis. That is narrative.
Common mistakes
- Substituting quantity for narrative. A bigger dungeon and a stronger enemy are scale, not narrative.
- A character who learns nothing from events. If they won, something must be different afterward: a relationship, a belief, a loss.
- No axis. If you cannot say in one word what the story is ultimately about, it has no axis. Choose the word: "alone", "debt", "a name".
