Meaning
Goguma, "sweet potato", is reader slang for a stretch that makes the reader's chest tighten: the protagonist is framed and cannot explain, a misunderstanding drags across episodes, or a character walks into a trap everyone can see. The image is eating boiled sweet potato with no water. The derived word godabi ("sweet-potato stuffy") labels a character who keeps behaving frustratingly. Its opposite is cider, and the pair forms the basic emotional rhythm of Korean web fiction.
Why it matters
Goguma is not a flaw. Cider without goguma is flat soda. What matters is dose and cause. Readers tolerate mounting pressure; they do not tolerate pressure caused by a protagonist being stupid. When comments ask "why doesn't she just say the one sentence that clears this up", it is already too late. Good goguma is the protagonist doing everything right and things getting worse anyway. Bad goguma is the author making a character dim to stretch the conflict. Goguma also needs an expiry date: readers keep going only when they can see when the frustration ends.

The chairman slid the approval back across the desk. "Nobody in this building has forgotten how your father left that company."
Taeho said nothing. The proof that his father had been a whistleblower, not an embezzler, was in the bag at his feet. But producing it today would get the person who leaked it fired first. Ten days until the shareholders' meeting. Taeho gathered the papers and stood.
"Understood."
The reason the protagonist cannot answer (protecting a source) and the deadline (the meeting in ten days) are both explicit. The reader is frustrated but does not think Taeho is a fool; they wait for the tenth day.
Common mistakes
- No expiry date. Frustration with no visible end drives readers away. Show the deadline or the condition.
- Manufacturing goguma through incompetence. If the reader cannot see the character trying, frustration curdles into irritation.
- Stacking goguma episodes. Three or more in a row without any release breaks the payment chain. Put a small cider between large gogumas.
